Cabling and bracing is a process intended to support weak or damaged limbs by installing cables between two or more branches. Often, storm damaged, structurally unsound or dangerous limbs can be shored up and supported instead of resorting to excessive pruning or complete tree removal, allowing the tree to grow normally and resist high wind stress. The process of cabling and bracing requires ongoing attention, as all hardware should be inspected annually to check for defects and to make any needed adjustments.
It is important to note that a cabling support system is not the same as fixing or healing the tree; only the tree itself can do that. This system is a mechanical device that is meant to help aid the tree with wind stress, storm damage, or weak limbs, and will not make a potentially dangerous tree completely safe. Once a tree is assessed as a hazard, there will always be a possibility of it failing. While cabling and bracing is one solution that will allow you to keep your tree, you should also consider having the tree removed by a professional.

Q: Why Does My Tree Need Cabling And Bracing?
A: Support cables and braces are installed as a way to strengthen damaged or weak limbs against failure or wind stress, and as an alternative to excessive pruning or tree removal. This is a preventative measure to allow the tree to heal or strengthen itself against further damage and eventually become a stable and healthy tree. If tree or limb failure is imminent, removal of the tree or limb should be considered.
Q: How Often Should A Bracing System Be Inspected?
A: Generally speaking, a cabling and bracing system should be inspected annually for defects in the device and to make needed adjustments. If at any time the support devices appear to need attention or adjustment, please contact TREEMASTERS to schedule an inspection as soon as possible.
Q: Why Does TREEMASTERS Use Synthetic Fiber Cables Instead Of Steel?
A: While steel cables and lag hooks have been the industry standard for many years, developments in cabling and bracing technology have shown the limitations of traditional steel devices. Cobra Cable, a tree bracing system using hollow synthetic fiber cables, shock absorbers, and loop bracing allows the tree to flex and grow naturally while protecting against high wind stress and supporting weak or damaged limbs. In addition, steel devices use steel lag hooks that are drilled directly into the limb, opening a wound in the tree leaving the tree susceptible to disease and pest attack. Steel devices may also corrode over time, leaching harmful chemicals into the tree. TREEMASTERS recommends the use of the Cobra Cable synthetic tree bracing system.
